May in Lexington Park

JO Welch, a local mom trying to improve her photography skills, offered a half-hour photo shoot to us local moms trying to get better photos of our kids. It's a win-win for everyone, especially you lovely people who, I know, can never get enough photos of May.

You can learn more about Ms. Welch at her website here: http://www.browngirlblue.com/. She'll be doing our Christmas with Santa photos this year. You can see all of the photos from the session at Kodak Gallery, here. As ever, you don't need to sign in. Just click "View Slideshow."

Now, without further ado, who you've all been waiting for... Miss May.

The mystery of the oogly, solved... perhaps!

Those with memories like elephants may recall that one of May's first words was "Oogly." We had no idea what it meant but she used it deliberately and often.

Today I was feeding her yogurt and said, in that inane voice all mothers use, "Can you say 'yogurt'?"

And she said "oogly."

They don't sound alike to me, but hey, who am I to complain about a girl who can spot a cap across the street and shout "Red Sox!"?

Also, a note: May has her first trike! Grandmas Cathy and Pat and the Leblancs all kicked in for a Radio Flier trike with a steering handle and sun canopy and everything! May rode it about halfway to Starbucks this morning, then got off and pushed it the rest of the way. We also got to spend time yesterday with the Great Grandparents Murray and the Nielsen family (plus Sarah and Kevin, who are honorary Nielsens). May is very tired from her big day and we're hoping to get her sleeping patterns back into synch over the next week or so.

Christopher goes to see the doctor tomorrow morning to get his shoulder checked again, and a new "prescription" for physical therapy. He's been commenting that the stuff he's doing now only hurts a little bit. So clearly he needs to be doing more.

That's all the news there is to tell right now. We're hoping the heat breaks tonight so that we can spend more time outside.

More photos of May

So these are really just cropped black-and-white versions of different shots from the same set as the last entry. But I thought you might like to see them.

I know I'v ebeen lax about posting lately so what can I say about May to make up for it? May has begun using multiple-word phrases. "Big truck!" and "Big doggy!" and "Big bus! Bye bye big bus!" favorites among them. She quite clearly asks "What is that?" And she asks it a lot! She likes to say "no, no, no, no!" even when she doesn't mean it. She still uses signs often, which effectively doubles her vocabulary.

She regularly helps us unload the dishwasher. When I ask her to, she'll open the silverware drawer and then piece by piece, take spoons and forks to the drawer and throw them in. (It's well over her head, hence the throwing.) She puts things in the garbage and the dirty clothes hamper when asked to. Usually. Sometimes she mixes them up or sometimes she gets over enthused about it and I find my sneakers in the bottom of the hamper. She can follow most simple instructions like, "Go push the swing," or "Bring the Grumpy Caterpillar book to Mommy, please."

She loves books. Endlessly.

She's quite fearless around large dogs. I've taught her to stop and let me ask, "Is your doggy friendly? May we pet your doggy?" before approaching a dog, but she will happily deign to pat the canine on his flank. Small dogs, however, and butterflies, make her run in the other direction.

She loves the swings lately, which she calls "Whee!" for the noises you make. She's also become very enamored of riding on things. We've got a tiny little fire truck that's clearly not meant for riding that she scoots around on all the time. She also likes to try to put on clothes and can get very frustrated if she can't figure it out, which is most of the time. She can get hats on, however, and even on the hottest days last week, she would often pull a knit cap on over her curls.

Her hair has lately become a problematic length. The CindyLou Who-style ponytail in the front doesn't quite capture the curls on her left side, which flutter out and looks weirdly asymmetrical. I've managed proper pigtails, with all her hair up off her neck once or twice, but she knows how to pull those out when she gets frustrated with them. Barrettes are a lost cause. I'm hoping soon it will be long enough to put into one ponytail.

She has several small friends. There's Elijah (Dan and Viv's son) and Cynthia (Jen and Matt's daughter) in our Wednesday morning playgroup. There's Jake and his grandmother Nancy. We often see Marlena and Madeline and Maille around the neighborhood and I keep thinking that they should be a girl group together in a few decades because of their names: Call them The Four Ems or M-Cubed or something.

She likes her doll, Blue, and I plan to make her a special doll for Christmas. Of her many stuffed toys, she's often seen with Brunneous, Night-Night Bunny (he's a knuckleballer for the Sox), Kevin the Squirrel, and Rasta Bunny. She sings to them: Tick Tock, Twinkle Twinkle, and Open Shut Them being her favorite songs.

She can identify her nose, ears, eyes, mouth, head, hair, elbow, feet and hands, knee, belly button, bottom, leg, and chin. She knows a grackle from a sparrow from a pigeon. She knows bunnies, squirrels, turtles, snakes, and chickens, not to mention pigs, cows, sheep, goats, and horses. She knows a truck from a tractor from a bus. She knows monkeys and balloons and butterflies (as long as they are on a page -- as I said, in real life she runs from them). All children under three are "babies!" and all children over three are (little girls) (said in sign). She points out when people are wearing hats or shoes and gets very excited over Red Sox caps or shirts.

She can walk up stairs by herself and easily walks several miles a day. She can pick up a full glass of water without spilling it and is moments away from figuring out how to drink from it. She eats everything darned thing but often asks for (and gets) cheese, apples, crackers, and milk. Turkey, avocado, Shredded Wheat, and grapes are big favorites and we just discovered that she loves fresh cantaloupe. Well, who doesn't, right?

Okay, that's enough for right now. I've got to go preheat the oven and glaze my bread. (It's cool enough to bake! Yay!) I hope this helps with your May fix for a while.

The heat has finally broken!

After weeks of unrelenting heat, Boston's finally cooled down to reasonable temperatures. Friday night was the last of the heat and we're hoping it will stay nice for a while. David and Jen dropped by on Friday to try out dumplings from Wang's. (Ming Tsai says they are good as his mom's!) Jen, being the excellent photog she is, and knowing that our camera has left this world for the big camera graveyard in the sky, took many many photos of May for you all.

You can see them all by clicking on this paragraph. As ever, you don't need to sign in. Just click on the button that says "View Photos." Or, if you're not in the mood for 50 photos, here's a nice little selection of Jen's finest.

Also, in family news, Noel had her baby! Yay! Joseph Peter, happy and healthy!

Quick update

Things are proceeding apace here in Chez Ferry. May is asleep right now -- a rare and glorious blessing of late -- and Christopher is at work. His pt is coming along nicely -- he has already increased his range of motion by quite a bit. I think that this is just a matter of working the kinks and stiffness out after a fortnight of not moving it, since he still can't move the bum arm by itself.

My birthday was lovely and I want to thank everyone for their kindness. Christopher threw a little party for my Boston-area friends on Sunday afternoon -- we had ice cream cake and it was very good. It was nice to see everyone I haven't seen in a while, since we've been pretty busy with the bum shoulder and everything.

We managed to dump water all over our camera so we're not so great with the photo updates, sorry. Be well.

Why doctors shouldn't explain drugs at 10 p.m.

Christopher went to the doctor today and got his stitches out. Everything is healing up just fine, the doc said.

He will begin physical therapy next week. In the meantime, he can use his elbow and wrist but not shoulder. He can take off his sling sometimes (but needs to sleep in it). And we've discovered why he's been a little dazed and light headed lately.

What we thought were the Tylenol type, anti-inflammatory/pain meds were in fact generic Percocet!

When the docs gave me his prescriptions after the surgery I was exhausted and apparently got a little confused. I knew he got an antibiotic (the red pills), an anti-inflammatory (the white ones), and a pain med (the other white ones). I would need to present ID to prove I was an adult and actually related to the patient to get the pain med. Since one set of white ones ran out after only three days, I figured that was the killer opiates. NOPE!

Apparently, the doctor says he's been taking fewer than she expected -- she expected him to need a refill before now but he only took the last pill last night. She says that since he's been okay with that low level of meds, he can just revert to Ibuprofen from now on.

He's healing up nicely, and was lucky. Apparently it's unusual to get this surgery done arthroscopically.

That's all for now.

Summer in the city

It's a very hot Saturday in Boston and we're hunkered down in the a-c, hoping that tonight will bring much cooler weather. (Wunderground says it will, but I'm skeptical.) Christopher is going on Monday to get his stitches out and find out what his physical therapy will be like. We're a little concerned because he doesn't have a lot of time left to take off and the p.t. will last at least 6 weeks. There's a faint hope that he can get Saturday appointments.

Last night was a great night in the Ferry family. Jen took pity on my sleep-deprived self (teething is hard on everyone) and came over and watched May while Christopher and I went and had dinner without anyone throwing food on the floor! Then we went and watched a movie: The Bourne Ultimatum. It was very good, and not just because we had a few rare hours to ourselves.

Other than that, there's not a lot going on. We're enjoying one of our rare weekends without major events -- certainly the first since the accident. We went out this morning and bought new drinking glasses since most of ours have broken lately. Christopher is reading and May is napping which is, frankly, nothing short of a miracle. She really hasn't been sleeping well at all. I'm hoping that now that the tooth is through, she'll sleep better. It's Slaughter Saturday so later today we'll get to go pick up our chickens from Pete and Jen. (I made up the name "Slaughter Saturday" but Christopher says he's not sure it's going to catch on.).

And, since all of this is very dull, I thought I'd include another movie of May at the beach.

The Ferrys are alright

Sorry we've been sparse on the postings lately. We're fine, if stretched a bit thin. Christopher is still in the sling. Stitches come out on Monday morning. May is fine -- she's cut a new tooth (her canine) and she's growing like a weed. Pants that fit her fine last week seem to be capris this week. Probably shorts next week.

She's expanding her spoken vocabulary quite quickly -- I can't even keep up with how many words she has. Her latest cute trick (as opposed to useful or clever tricks) is she will point to me and say "Mom-mee." Then to Christopher and say "Dad-dee." Then she will point to herself, wrap her arms around herself, and say, "Bay-Bee!" She's also trying very hard to dress herself. Which occasionally results in her walking around with a shirt mostly over her head, then whacking into something.

Thanks to the fabulous cinematography of Jen, we've got some videos of her at at the beach. Click below to see just how cute our girl really is.

Once he gets his stitches out, Christopher will be doing some p.t. for that arm. We'll keep you up to date on that, as well. Also, we finally had a condo meeting and Christopher was elected trustee. (One of three in a race in which there were only three. No laurels there, but at least we are in charge now. Sorta.)
